Inline Water Cooler Installation

INTENDED: All Water-Cooled ATVs | PERFORMED ON: Banshee | DIFFICULTY: 2/10

INTRO: You see these aluminum inline coolers all over now on your Yamaha ATV. They come in different sizes and colors, but share the same purpose; to help your engine run cooler. Do they actually work? Who knows, but they're cheap enough and real easy to install, so even if they help just slightly, it can be worth it. In this article, we'll be installing a 20-fin cooler on a Banshee. Let's get to it.

STEP ONE: Before you start on Yamaha ATV, place a bucket or drain pan under the front of the motor since you will be losing some of the coolant. Next, take a flathead screwdriver and loosen the hose clamp that attaches the coolant hose to the head of the motor. When it is loose, slowly pull the coolant hose off of the head. Be careful, as this is where the coolant will pour out. Make sure it is draining into the pan and wait until it stops flowing.

STEP TWO: Now, follow the coolant hose up to where it connects on Yamaha ATV> to the top of the radiator. Loosen the hose clamp fully and pull the coolant hose off of the radiator. Again, be careful as some more coolant will probably drip out. Now you have the coolant hose off of the machine.

STEP THREE: Lay the coolant hose down of Yamaha ATV and set the in-line cooler next to it in the position where the cooler is to be installed on the coolant hose. It is suggested to install the cooler in the middle of the coolant hose, or slightly more towards the head of the engine. Mark the coolant hose with a marker where the first cooling fin is, and where the last cooling fin is on the cooler.

STEP FOUR: Cut the coolant hose all the way through on both marks with a utility knife, and discard the small piece that is cut out. Try to make a very straight cut.

STEP FIVE: Take one piece of coolant hose and slide the cut end onto the cooler of Yamaha ATV. Do the same with the other piece on the opposite side of the cooler. Make sure you keep the bend of the coolant hose in the correct position so when installing back onto the machine, it lines back up perfectly. Now slide the provided hose clamps on each side, and tighten with a screwdriver.

STEP SIX: Slide the original hose clamps over each side of the coolant hose, and tighten lightly so they don't fall off during installation. Now, slide one side of the coolant hose on Yamaha ATV onto the radiator inlet. Make sure you have the correct end of the coolant hose. Loosen the hose clamp and slide it up to the desired location and tighten fully. Do the same now where the coolant hose connects to the head of the motor. You are now done, but make sure you refill the radiator with coolant and run the motor to check for any leaks. Good luck and enjoy a cooler running motor!
